Can’t stop the hack.Apparently it doesn’t go without saying that hackfests are where amazing stuff gets done fast, so for those of you who missed the memo: HACKFESTS ARE WHERE AMAZING STUFF GETS DONE FAST. Why would I bother parroting this after the FUDCon is already over? Because those of you who are Java fiends ought to know that our blood brothers at JBoss are having a hackathon of their own at JBoss World in Orlando, February 13-15. As if the conference sessions, keynotes, and BoFs weren’t enough! I’m going to start compiling bullet lists of all the things that got done at FUDCon since many of the people who might care a lot about the subject might not necessarily read our Planet feed.

Bojangles or Bust.At FUDCon, between the late night talk, trying to catch up with email, and the realization that HOLY CRAP I HAVE TO FILL MAX’S SHOES NOW, I got a total of roughly nine hours of sleep divided over three nights. Let’s take a tour from the perspective of someone who doesn’t roll out of bed into a vi session. (Yes, I’m talking about you, lmacken — you so pimp.) I start Thursday night with a rainy 200 mile drive, and check in at the hotel where I find a gaggle of Fedora buddies preparing to find sustenance. I find out that Bojangles is the place to go for some downhome style cooking if time is of the essence. I file this away and resolve to try it out while in Raleigh. I meet up with Max shortly thereafter for a great working dinner to talk about succession and strategies, and transfer control of the Fedora Orbital Laser briefcase. We have some great kebabs, conversation, and coffee, and then Max drops me off back at the hotel. Due to uncontrollable flight delays, I end up picking up my friend Jared Smith at the airport at about 1:00 a.m. (Seriously, NO WORRIES, man.) When we get back we get into a fistfight over who’s crashing on the couch, meaning we both want to nobly take the couch. I fade a little by the third round and then he’s got me on the ropes throwing crushers at my kidneys, so I crumble and Jared takes the sofa by decision. |
Marketing talk, part deux.Karsten already posted some information about a get-together we had with the fabulous Leigh Day on the final day of FUDCon. I wanted to add a little more raw content that I transcribed toward the end when Karsten, sadly, had to catch his plane back to sunny Cali: Red Hat Summit Presence:
“The Future, First.” Now to get some more Summit notes up here; stay tuned. I’ll try and dial down the cuddliness, mmkay? |
Don’t have to be cool. There are a lot of odd things that can happen when you’re running on about two or three hours of sleep a night, which often happens at FUDCon as well as in campaigns for political office. Some of them can end up on video, such as mistakenly saying the word “Core” when you meant — well, decidedly NOT that. Others, mercifully, do not, such as surprisingly sober (yet ill-advised and achingly unsoulful) karaoke renditions of “Kiss.” Hence the necessity in political campaigns for a horde of minders. And the next thing I know, someone’s shaking me awake as the convoy pulls into Grand Rapids…. |
There goes the neighborhood. The future is a great place to be. I’ll have more to say on this, and in a less flippant fashion, shortly — probably tomorrow. It’s been a great FUDCon Day 1, though. |
Affaire d’etat.Max has updated the FUDCon page with additional information on the specifics for Friday’s hackfest Day 1 at the State Club — make sure you check it out! Please excuse mistakes in the title as I’m not a Francophone. |
The answer to all my prayers. In case you hadn’t heard — maybe because of ear fatigue from records that are over-compressed — Turn Me Up! is leading the march toward a happier world full of clearer, more dynamic music. Watch the short video on the site, and then you’ll know why:

Move over Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news.I helped Evie learn TamTamEdit today on her OLPC XO. And another bedroom composer is born! |
And a merry Christmas to you too! What? Not enough news bones to chew about how we’re doing in the fights that matter? Try this one on for size. Now we need to work on transitioning this publicity battle into the hardware sphere. We still have Update: A commenter below says that I mean HDCP and not HDMI. Mea culpa! |
