Hail dystopia!

Hail dystopia!

Chris sent me a link to Evgeny Zamyatin’s We, a marginally science-fiction dystopian novel that predates both 1984 and Brave New World. I haven’t read it, but it looks fascinating, especially considering that Zamyatin’s work was filtered through his experience of Communism’s rise in his own land.

  1. i find it interesting that some of communism’s / socialism’s greatest lasting critics have come from the millieu of socialist revolutionaries, having been trench-workers, as it were.

though Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm are today hailed (respectively) as great anti-utopian and anti-Stalinist criticisms by most conservatives / classical liberals, he was most assuredly a socialist in his own sympathies. perhaps it’s what made these works more interesting – that they were crafted by a believer who was railing against not the underlying philosophies as much as the corruption of those philosophies.

who is a similar writer in “conservative” circles? and not a neocon – they don’t count! 😉

p.s. – your authcode at the moment sounds suspiciously like a COX-2 inhibitor pain reliever.
