Why can’t the Oscar producers figure out a way to honor the deceased luminaries without the Applause-O-Meter? I always feel bad for the sound editor no one’s heard of, who, likely as not, was a wonderful guy who deserved some applause for his work.

It’s called AGC (Automatic Gain Control). Then, the 10 applauding for the aforementioned sound editor will be just as loud as the 1000 clapping for the passing of Don Knotts… whose passing was strangely absent (perhaps too recent?).
