HydraSynth and Launch Control XL3

HydraSynth and Launch Control XL3

I recently got a Novation Launch Control XL3 to integrate some hardware control with my growing synth collection. I thought it would be interesting to pair my trusty HydraSynth and Launch Control XL3 to see how they played together.

The Launch Control XL3 lets you map and install custom modes using Novation’s Components app (available natively or on the web). I spent a little time mapping controls and came up with a map I like for now. I also created both CC and NRPN versions so it will work regardless of how I have my HydraSynth configured via System Setup.

The LCXL3 is an ideal small studio MIDI controller. It can provide both 7-bit and 14-bit MIDI messages, over CC or NRPN (per control!). It has 24 endless rotary encoders, 8 faders, and 16 buttons. The unit feels pretty rugged and there’s a nice friction to the controls so you don’t feel like they’re going wild on you. I enjoy using it. Typically I’d just use controls on the HydraSynth, since they feel great too. But there are times when I want to listen to patches in my studio’s ideal listening position. This solution lets me tweak patches while I’m working on other things in the arrangement too.

I’m sharing the folder where the MIDI sysex files are stored. Using Components, you can “upload” these to your profile and then load them to your LCXL3.

I’ve included two versions, one for CC messages, and one for high-resolution (14-bit) NRPN messages. The only difference is that there is no MIDI CC message for the Voice menu’s Analog Feel setting. In the CC map, I substituted Detune for that.

I can’t vouch for any compatibility to previous Launch Control controllers. I’ll be surprised if an older one works with these maps. But if you have an XL3 you may like them. Note that I’ve left a few encoders unused since you may have some preferences for specific controls.

Hopefully you’ll enjoy this method for combining your HydraSynth and Launch Control XL3. If you create your own MIDI mpa for the LCXL3 please share it!
