Moving Mastodon accounts.

Moving Mastodon accounts.

Unfortunately my previous Mastodon server, lor.sh, is shutting down soon. Today I moved it to a new home on musicians.today. Fortunately moving Mastodon accounts turned out to be very easy.

I admit, I flailed for a bit because I got confused by the menu diving between accounts. I also read some documentation to figure things out. However, I found multiple references to account aliases that confused me. I thought this was something I had to do myself by running a server. I had no intention of spending my time on that. It turns out Mastodon handles everything much more easily by itself.

  • I downloaded my content, in case I learn how to restore it. However, I probably don’t care enough to bother.
  • I also downloaded CSV of all my follow and block information.
  • I imported these into my new account, and uploaded my profile and header pictures. I manually copied only some basic profile information.
  • In my new account, I set up an alias to the old account using the Move from another server function. Mastodon handles the alias function for you here!
  • In the old server, I used the Move to another server function to send everything over. I listened to the “bubble pop” sound with amusement, while it went off incessantly as followers reappeared.
  • I updated a rel link on this blog, my Linktree sites, and some other pointers. I probably missed something, but I’ll clean things up as I find them.

I really don’t use the Fediverse that much. However, I still feel right and proper about moving Mastodon accounts. I’ll continue to publish my blog posts there. Who knows, I may pick back up on my habit of blogging more in the future.
