Chris, I’m torn about these ads myself. On the one hand, they don’t completely suck. Attractive female representing Linux is a nice touch. Both the script and the production values are pretty good. On the other hand, the ads contribute to the mistaken impression that there’s no innovation in FOSS. I mean, can’t we come up with our own original campaign while embracing the aesthetic simplicity and beauty at which Apple PR excels?
What better innovation is there other than time travel?
Come to think of it this is not inconsistent with the way that they “do innovation.”
Outlook -> Evolution
.NET -> Mono
Mac/PC Ads -> Novell Hot Girl Ads
What’s next, the N-pod?
I quite like Red Hat’s “Truth Happens” advertisement myself. But we certainly could use some original, consumer-oriented ads, that’s true.
I think you mean “excels” rather than “exceeds” — but then again, maybe not 🙂
cute ads, with a distinctly home-brew feel to them. i did like the lines, “how long you been standing over there? long time.”
HB, I did indeed mean “excels.” Updated the post accordingly.
